The sailing ship pictured on the seal is a vintage "Baltimore Clipper", one of the earliest symbols of America's merchant marine.  Named in honor of one of the young country's major seaports. The speed of those clippers was legendary and is reflected in the hull lines of USS BALTIMORE (SSN 704). Also depicted prominently in the ship's seal is six gold stars, each of the stars representing one of the great warships of this nation named BALTIMORE.  From being powered by sail and wind to power from the atom, these ships proudly protected the United States on the high seas.
